I am having eavestroughs installed, and the downpipe will terminate into a 4" underground pipe which I will drain away from the house. It's a short run underground (maybe 8ft) but will be under a walkway so I want to get something that: will not crack with temp changes/freezing water, and will not get crushed underground. I've read that PVC is not good for our climate, that corrugated is cheap but not very strong. Not sure if anyone sells

Ten years ago today I got to go on a pretty fun assignment. That spring, Lake Superior was almost completely covered in ice and a number of freighters became trapped. I hitched a ride with a Canadian Coast Guard helicopter to get some coverage of the icebreaking effort to free them.

If your water heater looks like this it might be time to upgrade. An aging tank is likely much less efficient than a newer model. Also as tanks age they are more likely to leak. Changing the tank near end of life is much better than having to deal with potential water damage if it does fail. There are many options to choose from all with different benefits. Tankless or full tank. Electric, natural gas or propane.
