As SooToday’s Kenneth Armstrong was conducting a master class today for Village Media photojournalists across Ontario, he mentioned the importance of paying attention to what’s happening behind your back. Earlier this week, I came across this shot of the late, great Jack Layton from the earliest days of SooToday. I took it at a Sault picket line, just a few months after the first known use of the term ‘selfie’ in September, 2002. The word began in Australia and took almost a decade to become widely used in North America. I used a 75 dpi Sony Mavica. You had to slide a floppy disc into the side of the camera to save images. As I recall, I had to change discs after every 10 shots.
