Many years ago, during times less enlightened than our own, I was advised by a much older political journalist to look around me at every political rally, counting the number of supporters I would describe as stunningly beautiful. His theory was that the more ravishingly pulchritudinous the party faithful, the less likely they were to show up in support of political lost causes. I admit I’ve scanned many a political crowd and found this simple metric to be a surprisingly accurate indicator of a candidate’s chance of winning or losing. These days, with my mobility severely limited by osteoarthritis and Himalayan-sized bone spurs, I’ve been unable to attend any election rallies to see whether my old coworker’s belief still applies.
