Best of Active Transportation Plan: The North East Passage

I still remember when in the 1980s Black Road had no paved shoulders and was one of the most treacherous stretch for cycling this part of town with no viable alternate way to get up to the Highlands from the east end. Now we have paved shoulders along Black but the road has become a very busy highway with noise and fumes and a difficult intersection for south bound cyclists at Second Line where the intersection design forces you between two lines of traffic; not suitable for beginners. Landslide Road up the hill is also challenging (going up) for beginners and the new link at Wishart will provide and very safe and pleasant off road alternative.

The consultants here propose an off road segregated north-south path through the solar farm connecting Manitou Park to Third Line and Wishart Park and on to the Highlands. This route provides a very good connection to east to Manitou Park, Rankin, Garden River, Echo Bay and beyond along the Lake Huron North Shore Bike Route.

Of course when you live on Case Road and you want to ride to Echo Bay this will take you away from traffic and the awkward intersections along Black/McNabb/Frontenac Streets. It also ties in very well to the soon to be opened link through Wishart Park. This is my second most favourite new route. Stay tuned for my favorite link coming up next.
